Start planning your next adventure and experience Madagascar’s south with those who call it home.
Madagascar's unique position and topography means it is home to some of the most varied and diverse landscapes in the world. The eastern coastal band is watered by the trade winds that blow across the Indian Ocean, while the western land mass behind the mountainous spine is dry for much of the year. Miremby can take you through the dry desert landscapes of the extreme south east, with their with spiny forests and baobabs, to the Utah-like canyons and prairies of the central belt, and the rainforest and rice paddies of the north and east, while arranging time to relax on the white sand beaches of the worlds fourth largest island.
Madagascar"s 107 lemur and 283 bird species make it one of the worlds most renowned biodiversity hot spots. What is more it's unique island habitat means many species have evolved in complete isolation from their neighbours in Africa and Indonesia so the majority of Madagascars's wildlife is endemic and can only be seen in Madagascar. Travelling with Miremby you can be confident your holiday will not harm this ecosystem. As conservations scientists, Miremby's founders, Bethany and Tsiraiky, ensure their tours are responsible and informative, while protecting the many endangered species that live here.
Madagascar is home to 18 district tribes with their own beliefs, dress and cultural taboos (fady). Miremby's close and long relationship with friends across the island and in-depth knowledge of people's beliefs and customs, will allow you to get to know the cattle owning Bara, the nomadic Vezo fishermen and the Antandroy who build their spectacular tombs in the extreme south west. Our sensitive and respectful approach allows us to offer unique insights into this culturally rich island. What is more Miremby's cultural experiences are designed to give back to the community in a meaningful way.
At Miremby we have tours with set departure dates but also organise totally bespoke itineraries for everyone from solo travellers, couples, to group tours or research expeditions. If you don't want to spend too much time on the road we can organise an itinerary based in Fort Dauphin, Tulear or Tana.
Miremby was born in the south of Madagascar. Fort Dauphin in the south east is our home. Our tours take you throughout the south and east , across to the drier western regions and the Mozambique channel, with its iconic Baobab forests, and up the RN7 with its wealth of natural parks, to the capital, Tana.
Miremby's trips take the slow road through southern Madagascar, allowing you the time to interact with people and wildlife along the way. Our community-led sustainable approach allows you to experience Malagasy culture, immerse yourself in the environment, take part in responsible wildlife viewing and give back to the people you meet. At Miremby we our staff receive a fair and sustainable wage.
